What are the culprits that come to mind when you think about the causes of obesity and poorly managed diabetes? Is it poor dietary adherence, minimal physical activity levels, poor medication compliance? Have you ever thought about Emotion and Stress-Related Eating being a culprit? Or, what about how your clients appraise stressful situations and then cope with these situations? If these variables did not come to mind, then underlying causes of obesity are potentially not being addressed. With the current obesity epidemic, health professionals must start thinking beyond the calorie balance equation to help clients achieve sustainable behavior change that improves health, weight, and most of all, quality of life.
I invite you to come to my presentation, “Emotion and Stress-Related Eating: Moving Beyond the Calorie Balance Equation”, to find out how to assess these non-traditional culprits of overweight and obesity. Do you currently assess for any type of Emotion and Stress-Related Eating or Appraisal of Resources and Ability to Cope? If you do, share with me what you do at aozier@niu.edu. Looking forward to a great conference!

All of us are certainly anticipating-and looking forward to-this year’s meeting. The 70th Scientific Sessions will present an exciting range of basic, clinical, and translational research.

Among the many highlights of the 70th Scientific Sessions are the final results of the ACCORD trial. The story from this study continues to add to our understanding of the relationship between glucose control, microvascular complications, and cardiovascular risk. No doubt this story will continue to unfold, and the ACCORD Symposium on the final day of this year’s meeting will be highly anticipated.

Results of the ACCORD Clinical Trial

Tuesday, June 29 – Valencia Ballroom AB/CD
Emily Y. Chew, MD

This year’s sessions also bring a renewed focus on scientific and clinical issues in type 1 diabetes, ranging from transplantation to immunology to the artificial pancreas. In collaboration with the JDRF, the ADA will be hosting a symposium on the developments in closed loop insulin delivery systems (the artificial pancreas) and highlighting work with continuous glucose monitoring and care delivery for those with type 1 diabetes.

Joint ADA/JDRF Symposium—The Artificial Pancreas—A Goal within Reach?

Sunday, June 27 – Room 311
Co-Chairs: Richard M. Bergenstal, MD and Richard A. Insel, MD

3:20 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Questions and Answers

Other notable presentations and highlights include the annual ADA/The Lancet Symposium, discussions of diabetes epidemiology, lipid management in diabetes (just how important is HDL cholesterol?), the role vitamin D plays in type 2 diabetes, and the impact of health reform on diabetes care delivery, to name just a few. As always, we will highlight our national award recipients- those that have served the ADA scientific, clinical and volunteer communities-and we invite you to join us in celebrating their accomplishments.

Joint ADA/The Lancet Symposium

David R. McCance, MD

There are many other presentations and symposia that have grabbed our attention, including programs on diabetes prevention. We hope to gain additional insight into exactly how successful programs like the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) can be put in place in our everyday world. We are seeing a great deal of new work on implementation of DPP style interventions, in a wide array of community settings.

We hope you can join us for all or part of this year’s program and sample from more than 140 symposia (featuring over 300 nationally and internationally recognized speakers) and over 2,000 individual abstract presentations. From the Opening Reception at Walt Disney World’s Epcot theme park to our Presidential Poster Session, there’s something for everyone in this year’s program.

I plan to discuss the evidence for the co-occurrence and also discuss the rather controversial area of whether patients with Type I diabetes and even their family should be routinely screened for celiac disease. If so, how is that best done and how that might affect their general health? Should we test for genetic risk for celiac disease?

At L.K.Diabetes Centre, we use the Samadhan System of Diabetes Education. The word samadhan means ‘solution’ in the hindi language.

This system is based on 4 principles:

Simplicity
Need no special training
Economical
Effective

Conventionally, health education is rendered through literature and lectures, which are often boring and ineffective. Different diabetes patients need different education.

We at L.K.Diabetes Centre, Indiranagar, Lucknow produce different set of films. We have classified films based on type, duration and complication of diabetes. We display them in the waiting room of our diabetes centre, during diabetes camps and distribute amongst doctors through diabetes associations. We make these films using mobile phones (Mobi−films) so that we may forward these education films as MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) from one mobile phone to another.

We organize workshops where we train colleagues in making mobi-films. Doctors make mobi-films to educate patients and colleagues.

Patients make mobi-films to record their activities (self insulin administration at home/ diet intake etc) and show them to doctor/educator during their visit so that mistakes can be corrected.

Making these films only requires a basic mobile phone to take pictures/videos/audio. Then shift these to computer software Windows Movie Maker (available free in all computers using Windows XP). Patients should be involved in script writing and acting. Then align the pictures/videos/audio in the timeline of the software. Basic editing and background music should be added to add some spice. Cheers! A health care film is ready.

I represented India in a contest called Mobile Film Makers 2006 organized by Discovery TV Channel and NOKIA. My Mobi−films on diabetic foot care were selected in top 14 from Asia−Pacific region and I was selected as Nokia Ambassador!

L.K.Diabetes Centre is the first private exclusive diabetes centre of North India, established 18 years ago by Dr. Lakshmi Kant Shankhdhar.

Kshitij Shankhdhar is a diabetologist and diabetic foot care expert at Lucknow Diabetic Foot Care Clinic and Research Centre, LK Diabetes Centre, Indiranagar, Lucknow, India. Lakshmi Kant Shankhdhar is an endocrinologist and takes care of the Thyroid and Obesity Unit at LK Diabetes Centre.

The American Diabetes Association’s 70th Scientific Sessions has a new feature – a blog.

The blog will give speakers and the meeting planning committee a chance to give their perspective on some of the highlights of the meeting, to share tips on traveling to Orlando, or even what restaurants you shouldn’t miss. We hope this will be a fun, engaging opportunity to get ready for an enlightening and entertaining meeting.

Our upcoming meeting will be attended by thousands of members of the diabetes community from around the world. The program was developed by the Scientific Sessions Meeting Planning Committee, chaired by Dr. Andrew F. Stewart.

In addition, over 300 health professionals and scientists reviewed more than 2,800 abstracts, with over 2,000 abstracts selected for oral and poster sessions. These presentations represent the highest quality research in diabetes today.

This year’s program has eight theme areas focusing on the latest in basic, clinical, behavioral, public health, and educational research. Each day’s schedule includes concurrent symposia, state-of-the-art lectures, current issues, and oral and poster presentations.

West Building of the Orange County Convention Center

During the meeting the Association will honor the recipients of its highest National Scientific & Health Care Achievement Awards, and special lectures will be presented. Please join us in congratulating them on their outstanding achievements. See a complete listing of the Association’s 2010 National Achievement Award recipients.

New this year: the program will include Guided Audio Poster Tours. Moderators will lead attendees on one-hour tours of select posters, sharing their perspectives and highlighting novel or recent developments in question and answer sessions with poster presenters. Additionally, we have brought back the Presidents Poster Session and Reception on Sunday evening. This prestigious session will showcase 100 abstracts.

Plan to visit the Exhibit Hall where over 150 companies will be showcasing information, devices, supplies, and pharmaceuticals for diabetes care and management. We strongly urge you to take full advantage of this broad-based, state-of-the-art exhibition. As always, we are grateful for the generous support from our corporate partners.

Again, we welcome you to what promises to be an exciting, informative, and educational event.
